Musicians in Ghana have lamented the fact that they do not receive their deserved royalties from their music. Many people have dragged the Ghana Music Rights Organization (GHAMRO) on their mismanagement and unfair distribution of royalties, which has caused them to lose trust in the organization.
Bessa Simon, who happens to be the president of the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA), has expressed his dedication to fighting for what is right for musicians who feel cheated by GHAMRO. Bessa Simon disclosed that there are lawyers to back him in ensuring that musicians are fairly paid the amount of money they deserve in order to instill trust in them. He indicated that people should not misidentify MUSIGA as the one responsible for the distribution of royalties, but they have a common goal to see to it that every musician who joins MUSIGA is fairly treated.
He cautioned the public to note the difference between GHAMRO and MUSIGA, as he has encountered situations at places where musicians asked him to collect their money for them. Bessa Simon indicated that though MUSIGA is not responsible for the distribution of royalties to musicians, they also have the role of monitoring the activities of GHAMRO and putting them on the right path.
Bessa Simon called for calm among musicians as his term in office shall fight for musicians and collect what they deserve for them because MUSIGA is their backbone. He told Nana Ama McBrown on Onua TV’s Showtime. Many musicians in Ghana have belittled the work of both GHAMRO and MUSIGA, thinking their work is not up to what is expected of them.
